HISTORY

BETWEEN THE OTAVI MOUNTAINS IN THE LARGE OTJOZONDJUPA REGION IN NORTH CENTRAL NAMIBIA LIES THE MINING TOWN OF KOMBAT.

Historically, Kombat has been known for its rich copper deposits, its well-designed locality, and its modern amenities. Kombat is located along the Trans-Caprivi highway in the famous Maize Triangle of Otavi, Grootfontein, and Tsumeb.

Minerals were discovered near Kombat in 1850. Around the year 1900, the Kombat Mine was opened to extract copper. Tsumeb Corporation Limited (TCL) operated the mine until 1970, after which, it changed hands multiple times in the following years. The mine stood as one of the most active mines in the country, producing 12.46 million tons of copper over a period of (how many) years. In addition to copper, sizeable deposits of lead and silver were also found. Copper mining operations ceased in 2008 as a result of severe underground flooding.

Throughout the country, individuals recognize Kombat as a strong competitor in an array of different sports. Kombat has had successful teams in rugby, football, and netball. These teams have competed in the popular annual Chamber of Mines Multi Sports Games.

Kombat is still home to thousands of residents from neighboring farms and settlements. The residents still come to the town for school, medical treatment, and other basic necessities.

Despite the difficult economic situation since the closure of the mine the residents have maintained hope that the economy will improve.

MANAGEMENT OF THE TOWN OF KOMBAT

Ordinarily in Namibia the management of towns falls under the jurisdiction of national, regional, or local government authorities. However, Kombat is different. The Town has historically been under private administration of the respective mine owners. The owners provide basic necessities for residents of the Town. These include housing, transport, medical service and recreation. With regard to recreation and sports, the town has hosted various sports codes such as rugby, football, and netball at events such as the Chamber of Mines Multi Sports Games.
